Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia and the capital of the Štajerska region in the northeast of the country. It is nestled along the River Drava and surrounded by the green forests of the Pohorje Hills and by gentle wine-growing hills. For decades, it has hosted Alpine skiing World Cup races. You can reach the ski slopes or the starting point for your hike by city bus. In recent years, the the Maribor Pohorje Hills have been increasingly popular with mountain and downhill bikers.

If you find Pohorje too much of a challenge, take a walk among vineyards, which surround Maribor on nearby gentle hills. You can also have some fun along the River Drava, which flows through the city.
