TOP peaks in the hills

TOP peaks in the hills of Slovenian Alps

Our hills certainly offer a wealth of hiking options, depending on how much time you have. Just to give you a taste, we’d like to recommend some of our favourite green peaks.

    Porezen, 1630 m

This is the tallest peak in the Cerkno Hills commanding a beautiful view of the surrounding hills. This hill’s south and west slopes are rich in mountain flowers, while the slopes in the north and east are dense with forests. On the top, you can find the remains of a labyrinth of underground tunnels that connect forts on the northern and eastern sides of Porezen. These forts were once a part of a system of fortifications called the Alpine Wall (Vallo Alpino), built by the Italians before World War II in the border area between Italy and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Interesting!

    Črni Vrh Hill, 1543 m

The highest peak of the plateau-like Pohorje Hills provides beautiful views of the nearby Mt Uršlja Gora and the Kamnik and Savinja Alps in the distance. The summit is grassy and easily reached by way of an easy marked trail. This trail begins at the Ribniška Koča mountain cabin and initially follows the ski slopes of the Kope Ski Centre. The ascent is also suitable for families with small children. Soft meadows cover this vast plateau-like peak, where you can relax and let your children run around freely.

The Škofja Loka Hills are popular with hikers

    Kum, 1220 m
Due to its height, which makes it stand out among the surrounding gentle hills, Kum is sometimes humorously called ‘Triglav or Zasavje’. A road and multiple marked trails lead you to the summit. Various structures can be found there, including: a mountain cabin, a radio and TV transmitter, a little church, and a playground for children. If the weather is nice, the view from the top reaches past the Posavje Hills all the way to the Kamnik and Savinja Alps and even further, to the Julian Alps and the Karavanke Alps.

    Tošč, 1021 m
The E7 European Long-Distance Path and the Polhov Gradec Hiking Path go across Tošč, the tallest hill in the Polhov Gradec Dolomites. Multiple marked trails lead you to the top. This is a popular hiking destination, particularly in the spring and autumn.

Lovrenc Lakes in the Pohorje Hills

    Blegoš, 1562 m
This hill rises between the Poljane and Selce Valleys. Multiple trails take you to the top, but the best access is through the village of Gorenja Žetina. From the top, you can enjoy the best view of the tallest Slovenian mountains, namely the Julian Alps, Karavanke Alps, and the Kamnik and Savinja Alps. The Koča na Blegošu mountain cabin is located north-east of the summit, on the edge of a panoramic grassy ridge.

    The Polhov Gradec Hills

Many peaks in the hills are ideal for an easy ascent. A network of hiking and themed trails will take you over rounded peaks and across vast plateaus.
