Cerkno is an area in the Cerkno-Idrija foothills, known for its interesting rivers with pure-bred brown trout, its unspoilt nature, which is part of the Natura 2000 area, and its rich flora and fauna.
If you are interested in prehistory, visit the Divje Babe Archaeological Park, one of the most important Stone Age sites in the world. Here, the bones of more than 60 different animal species have been found, as well as the tools and hearths of ice-age man.
And if you’re into more recent history, a visit to the Franja Partisan Hospital, located in the narrow Pasica Gorge, is a must. During the Second World War, a well-equipped secret partisan hospital operated here, treating the most seriously wounded.
If it’s outdoor exercise you’re after rather than history, Cerkno has plenty to offer in both summer and winter. The Cerkno Ski Centre is an important destination for day trippers and recreational skiers. At an altitude of 800 to 1300 m, it offers 18 km of slopes of varying difficulty and a wide range of additional facilities.
