Cerklje na Gorenjskem

Open hearts in the adventurous countryside

There, a little further away from the main airport in Slovenia, where the well-kept meadows and forests begin to give way to the slopes of the Kamnik Savinja Alps, is a small town, Cerklje na Gorenjskem. A destination of small villages inhabited by good-hearted people, but also a place where the traveller will find royal refuges, clean water springs, themed trails, a ski resort and challenging cycling climbs, all well steeped in culture and history.

If picturesque nature, peaceful surroundings, contact with animals, delicious tastes of local food and the familiarity of rural culture are your idea of a perfect holiday, then Cerklje is the right choice for you. You can expect a warm, personal welcome and an unforgettable experience of the real countryside. If you stay in Cerklje, your walks will be enriched by ponds, well-kept woods and beautiful architecture in the villages you pass through.

One of the options for an easy hike is the Thematic trail under the forest canopy. The 11 km long trail, which is classified as easier and takes up to 3 hours, combines natural history, cultural and sporting activities. The majority of the area with its rich cultural heritage is a protected natural site, which is included in Natura 2000. The special feature of the route is its historical role, linking the settlements on Štefanja Gora with the lower-lying towns in the valley, which were strongly culturally and economically dependent on each other.

Keep your eyes peeled while walking, as the environment of Cerklje na Gorenjskem is famous for bird watching, and you can find bird watching tips HERE

The area of Cerklje na Gorenjskem is extremely rich in drinking water, which the Kamnik-Savinja Alps Association has combined into an excellent, multi-stage (11) circular and relatively easy trail that will take you, over 190 kilometres, along 4 rivers and more than 100 streams, to 3 lakes and more than 100 springs. The sound of countless waterfalls will accompany you as you walk along the Kamnik Savinja Alps Water Trail.

The Krvavec mountain centre and ski resort is situated above Cerklje.

In summer, it is a popular destination for road and MTB cyclists (there is now also an asphalted road to the top), and at the top, in addition to a good restaurant (famous for its ribs), there is also a Bike Park, an adventure and adrenaline park, and the adventures of adventurous elves who animate the little ones.

If you don’t want to go down from Krvavec by bike or cable car, you have another option – you can fly down from Krvavec. The paragliding take-off point is located on the upper slopes – Ambrož, at an altitude of 1320m ASL, with prevailing winds from the S, SW and W directions. If you do not bring your own paraglider, tandem flights with an experienced guide are possible by prior arrangement.

Below Krvavec, a little further from the fork, is one of the most beautiful mansions in Slovenia, Strmol Castle. A walk around the estate past the pond is a must, but you can also lie down on the grass, book in hand, and dream of castle life. You can also take a guided tour of the castle and its rich collection of furniture – after all, it’s all about combining a workout for the body with a workout for the mind.
