The most beautifull valleys of Slovenia

Would you like to visit the most beautiful valleys in the Alps? You’ll find them in the north of Slovenia, right on the Austrian-Slovenian border. Glaciers have carved three deep valleys into the rocks, which today offer visitors spectacular views. They are arranged side by side, so it’s easy to explore them no matter where you set up your “base camp”.

The Kamnik-Savinja Alps in these valleys offer a wealth of natural and cultural sights. The most beautiful views of all the valleys can be found on the Solčava Panoramic Route, which, along its 37 km length, will take you past breath-taking views of the dizzying peaks, beautiful valleys, and past the subsistence farms of the high mountains, which have been producing local specialities  and offering hospitality to the travellers of the high mountain world for centuries.

You can either walk or ride a bike along the trail, which has 20 well-equipped stops. And don’t worry, you don’t have to walk the whole route in one go, as it’s sensibly divided into stages. For a day trip, it’s best to take the central part of the trail, where you’ll find 12 stops along the 21 km. The Solčava Panoramic Route has four entry points. These are Solčava, the Logar Valley, Zgornje Sleme from the Carinthian side and the Pavličevo sedlo pass international border crossing from Austria.

When we talk about easy trails that families with small children can enjoy, we shouldn’t miss the Solčava Yew Woods theme trail and the Logarska Valley Trail. The Solčava Yew Trail is a circular themed trail, that will take you about an hour and fifteen minutes to complete, where you will visit a 700-year-old yew tree with a trunk more than one metre in diameter. The Logarska Valley Trail is slightly longer at 7 km and will take you about 3 hours of easy hiking. Of course, you can join the trail at several points along the valley to shorten it as you wish. The trail will take you from the beginning of the valley all the way to the Rinka waterfall at the end of the valley. Along the way, you will see the second spring of the Savinja river, mighty boulders, the Olcar and Charcoal Farm, a hunting lodge, a giant juniper tree… in short, the trail is one of the most beautiful ways to visit the Logarska dolina valley.

In addition to their own beauty, these three valleys are also an excellent starting point for serious hiking in the high mountains. For example, to Kamniško Sedlo pass, Podolševa, Grintovec, Dom na Okrešlju, etc., which are also popular in winter if you are looking for more demanding climbs.

Important information for visitors! To keep yourself together, be sure to try the traditional homemade sour milk with “žganci” and top your sandwich with Savinja gizzard, a local meat delicacy. In that way you won’t go hungry and you’ll have plenty of energy to enjoy this clean and beautiful mountain environment for the whole day.

If you prefer cycling to walking, great, you can also cycle the Solčava Panorama Route. As the traffic is limited in the valleys, also the roads  are a very pleasant cycling playground. You can rent bikes at the Rinka centre for €25 (classic) or €45 (electric), if you come without your own.

In the coming winter, the plains of the Logarska dolina valley are also equipped with cross-country skiing tracks, and here you will also find frozen waterfalls extremely suitable for ice climbing, for example, the one behind the hotel Plesnik is very popular.
