Posavje

Hidden pearl of Slovenia

Have you ever visited, we mean really visited and experienced Posavje? A land that the locals themselves describe as follows: “We have everything that others have, only calmer, more coordinated, more harmonious.” Because Posavje people are like that. Above all, we are in a good mood and relaxed. No extremes, balanced. And we want our guests to enjoy our peace as well. Only when it comes to gourmet pleasures do we perhaps exaggerate and lead the way. Our cuisine is not famous, but it is the best. Our wines are not the most expensive, but they are the best. The best at our home-made snacks, in taverns, “oštaria” or on picnics in nature.”

So, throw some sports equipment, jeans and a shirt or two in the suitcase, load your better half (and children and a pet) into the car, and for the purposes of scientific confirmation of the above quote, chart a course towards Krško or Brežice. We strongly recommend that you also bring bicycles, but if you don’t have them or can’t be bothered to pack them… they also have them in Posavje (so many in fact that they even rent some to you 😊 )

This is our suggestion for a weekend of outdoor wandering, but there are so many routes and activities to choose from that you won’t have any problem adjusting the recipe

    Posavje moments

    DAY 1

Transport and accommodation “formalities” will probably take up most of your day, especially if you start on Friday after work. Therefore, this day will be reserved for an easier walk, perhaps we can suggest you the Josipina Trail starting in the old town. The round trip will take you about an hour and a half.

You can also use the evening hours to visit one of the 7 magnificent, as they are called. It concerns the castles of Rajhenburg, Brežice, Sevnica, Mokrice, Svibno, Kunšperk and the Kostanjevica monastery on Krka, which were united into a single” story” in Posavje. You can experience this story through a full-day cycling experience, or you can just use those jeans and a shirt  in the evening and have amazing dinner at Rajhenburg Castle.

    DAY 2

Let us first suggest some routes for cyclists. If you are a mountain biker, we suggest the Trdinova bike trail, that is 65 km long (with 1,633 m ascent). The circular route, which starts and ends in Kostanjevica na Krka, will take you about 6 hours of cycling. A shorter option is the Path around Brestanica, which is 25 kilometers long.

For trekking or family all-day cycling, go on a bike ride along the Sava river. A 60 km long, mostly macadam level path will take you from Radeč to Brežice. You can return to the starting point by train.

Is that too much? The choice of shorter and easier routes is extensive, but for true hedonists we would recommend the approximately 25 km long routes, suggestively named Chocolate Experience and Wine Experience with e-bikes. You can imagine that on these routes you will spend the day with only delicacies, beautiful views and without a bad conscience. For the real experience, it is best to register in advance, but you can with no problem head out by yourself.

Or do you swear to hiking discovery of areas? This is the reaction of our user when he embarked on the Path of 4 waterfalls: “Amazing hike. Absolutely recommend for hikers in good condition. It involves some climbing along iron steps. Take it clockwise“. (Sander Yoho).

In any case, during your discovery of Posavje, take the Trappist route, a route that will reveal to you, among other things, the historical importance of the Trappist monastic order.

From flat paths along the rivers, to MTB tours that will challenge you...

    DAY 3

You walked and cycled along the Sava and Krka rivers for two days, so maybe it would be also appropriate to go on them on the third day as well? Especially if the sun is shining and the weather is on the hot side. The rivers are wide, calm and slow, so you can go on them without too much worry by yourself, with SUP boards, canoes or rafts.

If, despite everything, you prefer hard ground under your feet and maybe even want a dose of adrenaline, a good idea is a paragliding flight, which always reveals a new dimension of the view, but you will also find one via ferrata in Posavje (on Lisca-Cerje) that offers short climbing routes sections, and allows you to get out of it if it gets too hard for you.

After reading this, you may think that we have forgotten the most important thing, because after all, an empty bag does not stand upright. Perhaps you didn’t know that Posavje is one of the most developed gourmet areas? Top restaurants and farm tourisms, where the food will come to your plate directly from the barn/garden/field, are waiting on you.
