If you’re looking for an active day trip idea, cycling along the Štrekna cycling route between Velenje and Dravograd is a great choice. The Štrekna route runs along a disused railway line, providing a scenic and safe cycling route, separated from the main roads. The total length of the route is 35 kilometres, making it ideal for a family outing.
The route starts in the village Selo near Velenje. The newly opened, 9.4-kilometre section Velenje – Gornji Dolič passes through the Huda luknja gorge and includes four tunnels and four overpasses, which makes cycling particularly interesting.
From Velenje (altitude 411 m), the route climbs gently towards Mislinja (590 m) and then descends towards Slovenj Gradec and Dravograd (341 m). The asphalted surface ensures a comfortable ride and is suitable for all ages.
If you still have some energy and cycling momentum left, you can cycle 10 kilometres further to Lavamünd in Austria. There, you can refresh yourself in the bathing lake by the Drava river. Alternatively, in Dravograd, you can join the Drava Cycling Route, which leads to Radlje ob Dravi and Maribor, and follow it to wherever your legs take you. If you run out of energy, take the Saturday cycle train back to Dravograd.
