Take a bike ride through the hilly landscapes of Metlika and Semič, where the autumn panoramas are truly enchanting. The most beautiful views are where cars can’t reach – so it’s best to explore on two wheels or on foot.
🚴Ride among the vines
In Bela krajina, we call a vineyard a vine. And in autumn, when all the attention is focused on grapes and the preparation of new wines, cycling among the vineyards is one of the most beautiful things. Bela krajina is the smallest wine-growing region in Slovenia, but with its location and soil characteristics, it creates excellent conditions for top-quality wines. Our winemakers are particularly proud of Metliška črnina – the only črnina (black wine) in Slovenia, which has long been a symbol of this region.
🥾The most beautiful hiking trails
If you set out on foot, you will discover hidden corners, cottages and wine cellars, where winemakers will be happy to serve you a glass of local wine. A walk among the mats is especially special – the brown eagle fern is waiting to be cut and put into stacks, and the white birches quietly tell the story of the landscape that was once covered with them. Mats are rare today and therefore protected, as they are an important part of the natural and cultural heritage.
Every part of Bela Krajina hides something new: discover the Temple of Mithras in the forest above Rožancec, walk across the karst field with the ruins of nomadic houses under Mirna gora, feel the tranquility along the Krupa River, climb the Sodevska stena, from where one of the most beautiful views of the Kolpa River opens up.
🌊Autumn Kolpa
After the refreshing summer jump into the river, when the Kolpa reaches 29 °C, autumn comes the time when it is filled with rain and cools down. But the Kolpa remains beautiful – you can safely, but in an experienced way, explore it by canoe or raft. Our providers only let you on the water when the conditions are suitable, and larger groups are accompanied by an experienced guide. Grab a paddle, let yourself go with the flow and admire the nature around you – grey herons, old mills and idyllic houses on both banks of the river.
🎣River Fishing
If you want a more peaceful experience, grab a fishing rod. Imagine the silence by the river, as the current gently creeps by, while you wait for a bite. When the rod moves, the adrenaline hits – will it be catfish, chub, trout or barbel? But be careful – before fishing, get a permit and check the rules for the individual fishing area. Fish and order on the water are carefully monitored by the Črnomelj Fishing Family and the Metlika Fishing Family.
