Cycling in Slovenian Istria

An experience for every season

While most of Slovenia cools down and bikes are stored away for winter, the coast stays pleasantly warm, the trails sunny, and the air remains pleasantly mild and full of the scent of the sea. Koper – a city between the sea and the hills – is the perfect gateway for exploring Istria’s scenic landscapes all year round.

Thanks to its mild Mediterranean climate, cycling here is a joy in every season. When the days grow shorter and the light softer, autumn and winter reveal a different kind of beauty – vineyards and olive groves glowing in golden tones, sea views stretching all the way to snow-capped peaks, and the gentle rhythm of life slowing down.

From Koper, countless routes lead you into the heart of the countryside – through stone villages, among vineyards and olive trees, past local farms and friendly faces. Every ride here is more than just a workout – it’s a meeting with the land, its flavours, and its stories.

Seven routes – seven ways to experience Istria

The “Z bičikleto po Istri” series (literally Cycling through Istria) includes seven cycling routes that showcase the region’s true character – from the coast to the hills, from open sea views to quiet stone hamlets. Below are two that shine especially bright in autumn.

Autumn Views from Krkavče to Boršt

One of the most picturesque rides takes you from Krkavče to Boršt and back – through Puče, Koštabona, Pomjan, and the Dragonja Valley. The route winds between vineyards and olive groves, offering wide views and a touch of Istrian charm in every village you pass.

The 33.5-kilometre route is varied and scenic, suitable for mountain, e-mountain or gravel bikes – and perfect for those who enjoy combining nature, food, and culture on two wheels.

    Discovering Hidden Autumn Corners

If you prefer staying closer to the coast, try the Hidden Autumn Corners loop – 33 kilometres of cycling through a blend of sea breeze and countryside calm. The route connects Bertoki, Dekani, Tinjan, Plavje, Škofije, and Hrvatini, weaving between the coastal plain and the gentle hills above.

It starts at the Škocjanski zatok Nature Reserve, a great place for a peaceful stroll before or after your ride. From there, climb up to Tinjan Hill for a view of Trieste and the Karst Edge, then descend to Plavje. Along the way, stop for a treat in Škofije or for a wine tasting in Kolomban.

History buffs can explore the Elerji Hillfort, one of the finest prehistoric sites in Istria, while nature lovers will enjoy Resslov gaj, a forest park with Slovenia’s oldest olive grove and a stunning view of the sea.

The route is suitable for MTB or e-MTB bikes, runs mostly on asphalt and gravel, and can be enjoyed in every season.

Do you know what a bičikleta is?

In Istria, locals call a bicycle a bičikleta – a word borrowed from the Italian bicicletta that has become part of the everyday language.

But there’s also another kind of bičikleta: a simple, refreshing mix of cider and sparkling water – the perfect drink after a day on the bike. Light, crisp and, as locals say, really good. Sometimes the simplest things are the best.

    See you on the bičikleta!
