The Slovenian Alpine Trail (SPP) is the oldest and most popular mountain trail in Slovenia, and the oldest of its kind in Europe. It takes you from Maribor all the way to the Slovenian coast, to Ankaran. It is marked with the general marking of mountain trails in Slovenia – the Knafelč marking (a red circle with a white dot) and the added number 1.
The Slovenian mountain trail was created on the initiative of Ivan Šumljak, the conceptual and operational designer, who for two decades after the Second World War was the head of the marking section of the Maribor – Matica Mountain Society. Today, part of the route is named after him. The so-called Šumljak Trail runs from the start of the mountain transversal in Spodnje Radvanje all the way to the Maribor hut, in front of which his monument also stands.
The Slovenian Alpine Trail leads through the vast Pohorje forests from Maribor to Slovenj Gradec or vice versa. Along the way, you collect 6 Slovenian Mountain Trail stamps.
