Julian Alps – Kranjska Gora

'

The glory of Kranjska Gora has been carried beyond the borders of Slovenia by Alpine skiing and ski jumping, but it is with hiking and cycling that the resort lives through the entire year.

We invite you to discover over 100km of hiking trails. There are a number of options, from the easiest and gently sloping paths in an extraordinary natural environment, suitable for children, families, as well as for visitors who wish to see the beautiful nature without too much effort, to the serious mountain tours that require experience, suitable equipment and a mountain guide. You can choose from easily accessible attractions and Alpine valleys through easier climbs to the beautiful panoramic points of the alpine world all the way to the hidden corners high in the mountains, accessible only to the connoisseurs.

The unforgettable scenery of the Julian Alps in the heart of the Kingdom of the Goldhorn invites everyone eager to discover nature. Venture high and higher, through mountain windows, over saddles and passes. You can go on hike from Mojstrana to the foot of the 2864high Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s higest mountain, passing through the majestic valleys of Vrata, Kot and Krma. Maybe you would rather go on a hike from Kranjska Gora to the tiny scenic village of Srednji Vrh above Gozd Martuljek, which takes you through the meadows on the sun-facing slopes of the Karavanke mountain chain. The options are countless!

The Alpe-Adria Trail runs in 43 stages from the Austrian Corinthia across Slovenia to Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Kranjska Gora is one of the crossings on this trail and the ticket to the Triglav National Park, which is the only slovenian national park and one of the most beautiful parks in the world. Altitude differences on the route are low! On each stage you can try at least one culinary delight or find comfortable overnight accommodation.

One of the stages of the red Via Alpina trail leads through the ridges past Kranjska Gora, the Slovenian Mountain Museum in Mojstrana and the ski jumps in Planica ; the violet Via Alpina invites you to a hiking trip from Dovje past Dovška Baba to Golica. The Via Alpina routes are marked, not difficult and accessible to everyone.

The path that connects 10 cottages, attractions and viewpoints is the Fabulous path of 10 cottages. Starting from Kranjska Gora, the path, which is around 40 km long, can be conquered in four stages. Alternatively, you can spend two nights in cottages and complete the hike in three days.

Even if you are not planning of conquering any of the peaks which overlook this Alpine valley as guards, the Vrata Valley itself is worth seeing. Take time for a three-hour walk and head along an excellently marked Triglavska Bistrica Trail to the gable of the valley under the Triglav northern wall. All the way from Ros, the paths and trails continue along the Triglavska Bistrica stream, which springs up in the Vrata Valley and is 10 kilometres long. Follow the typical information boards of the Triglav National Park. Water of the Triglavska Bistrica stream is cold and refreshing. Sit on one of the white stones next to it, take off your shoes and put your tired feet in it, and let your eyes travel through the most beautiful rock faces of the Julian Alps.

TIPS FOR ACCOMODATION:

A must-try experience for any cycling visitor is the route between Mojstrana and Rateče, which runs along a well maintained asphalt cycle path past several interesting abandoned railway stations, well worth taking a closer look at.

If for you cycling is synonymous with great exertion, adventure and adrenaline-pumping excitement, you may be the right person to tackle the ascent of the Vršič mountain pass, one of Europe’s most challenging road cycling routes.

You can also choose Bike park. The park offers three different trails – Downhill, Airline and Lunapark – whose names say it all about the styles of riding you can choose from. Featuring a 350-metre vertical drop, several kulometres of trails with varied surfaces, and all kinds of fun obstacles such as bridges, jumps and teeter-totters, the park has something for everyone who can ride a bike.

Visit the Kranjska Gora Tourist Information Centre, get a hiking map of the Upper Sava Valley, and discover 20 different waymarkedroutes  through the area, from undemanding recreational trails to challenging treks into the mountains and 16 cycling tracks nested in the embrace of Kravanke and Julian Alps.
